A Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a "Nose Job", is performed primarily to improve the shape of the nose and sometimes to improve patients' breathing. Excessive dorsal hump, bulbous tip, or wide nostrils can create aesthetic disharmony and distort the balance of facial features. Attractive dorsal profile and well-shaped nasal tip not just greatly enhances the good looks, but also can speak favorably of one’s personality.
Rhinoplasty sometimes is roughly divided into cosmetic and functional, although the lines can be blurry. Cosmetic rhinoplasty is primarily concerned with the shape of the nose, its size, and its relation to other facial features. Straightening a previously broken nose, removing a dorsal hump, improving the shape of a bulbous tip, or narrowing wide nostrils are all good indications for cosmetic rhinoplasty.
Changing these adverse features improves the appearance of the nose creating more harmonious facial proportions.
Functional rhinoplasty is primarily concerned with a patient’s breathing. Nasal obstruction can be caused by narrowing of nasal passages, bending of the nasal septum to one side or deviation of the whole nasal structure. Nasal deviation is often a result of a prior trauma. It can adversely affect patient’s look as well as cause difficulty breathing. Straightening the nose and opening nasal passages to improve breathing is called functional rhinoplasty. This procedure requires the doctor to be an expert in nasal physiology and a skillful cosmetic surgeon. Good results, however, are greatly satisfying to the patient.
Rhinoplasty can be performed through external or “open” approach or through closed or “endonasal” approach.
Both of these techniques have their advantages and limitations. The advantages of external approach are better visualization and easier modification of nasal structures. The advantage of the endonasal approach is that it does not require an incision at the bottom of the nose and therefore leaves no visible scars. Hence, some people call it incision-less rhinoplasty. “Closed” approach, in my opinion, results in more subtle change of nasal shape and more natural appearance of the nose. Although every face is unique and every nose requires individualized technique, I tend to favor "endonasal" approach, as it better suits my aesthetic goals.
The timing of recovery from rhinoplasty correlates with the extent of the procedure.
Immediate postoperative healing process takes about a week or two. The nose may feel “stuffy” for a couple of days, and the cast or tape will stay over nasal dorsum for a week. After the first week or two the nose begins to look good and the signs of surgery begin to disappear. However, there is still more healing to be done.
The nose will continue to take shape over time, and its final shape will gradually develop. As the healing forces are acting upon nasal structure the whole nose will narrow and the tip will become be more defined as complete healing from your rhinoplasty takes place.
